Hello!
My name is Reid Pereira and I’m running to be your School Trustee for Ward 5 of the Winnipeg School Division.
I’ve lived, worked, and studied in Downtown Winnipeg for the last 8 years and am proud and excited to lay down my roots here to start a family with my loving partner. Living Downtown has granted me the opportunity to work alongside the Vision Impaired Resource Network (VIRN), assisting with programs to advocate for accessibility in public life and promote active living among people with vision loss and volunteer at my local food bank at First Lutheran Church on Victor Street. I’m also a steward in my union (MGEU) so I know what it means to stand up for workers and their families – from teachers to bus drivers, educational assistants, and their children who attend our schools in Ward 5.
I see how austerity and political attacks are putting pressure on our schools. I’m focused on practical solutions: expanding before- and after-school care, making sure that every school offers free breakfast and lunch to ensure the nutritional health of our youth, improving mental health and therapy supports, and pushing for year-round 30 km/h school zones to keep kids safe. I’ve called Downtown Winnipeg home for 8 years, and I’m running to be a trustee who listens, shows up, and gets things done for Ward 5.
COMMUNITY EXPERIENCE
- Vision Impaired Resource Network (VIRN) – organizing educational, fundraising, and active living events and assisting vision-impaired people with new technology and supports
- Winnipeg Harvest food bank at First Lutheran Church
- R.A. Steen Community Centre – helping to run the summer daycare
- Scouts Canada – teaching outdoorsmanship to Scouts, Cubs, and Ventures
- Navy League of Canada – teaching citizenship to children
- Canadian Network on Cuba’s Che Guevara Volunteer Work Brigade
